Opal B. Van Horn, age 92, resident of 73 Edgewood Drive, Shelby died Friday, March 26, 2004 at her home.

Born September 5, 1911 in Sycamore, Ohio to Paul and Gertrude (Hoadley) Black she had been a Shelby resident the majority of her life. Opal was a former employee of the Shelby Salesbook and had worked at the Mansfield Art Center for 25 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mansfield Art Center, Brush and Palette Club, and the Shelby Garden Club. An accomplished artist, she enjoyed painting, sewing, hooking and braiding rugs.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Judy Van Horn of Shelby; three granddaughters and their spouses; Camille and Mike Wing; Heather and Shawn Buchtel; and Kara and Matt Van Meter; four great-grandchildren; Scott and Natalie Wing and Carter and Abby Buchtel; one sister, Muriel Grove of Shelby; nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry James Van Horn in 1959; one stepson, Henry J. Van Horn, Jr.; one step-daughter, Sally Finney; one grandson, Gregory B. Van Horn; and one sister, Thelma Schell.

As per Mrs. Van Horn's request, calling hours and funeral services will not be observed. Private graveside services will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Shelby, with Reverend James L. Smith officiating. Memorial expressions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church. Barkdull Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
