Richard T. Utz, age 72, resident of Woodland Rd., Shelby died Friday, August 12, 2005 at the home of his daughter following a brief illness.

Born August 22, 1932 in Shelby to Dalton T. and Margaret (Bishop) Utz, he had been a Shelby resident much of his life. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1950 and attended Kent State University and Ashland College. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during the Korean Conflict. On May 30, 1953 he married Joanne D. Broderick, who preceded him in death on May 24, 2005. Mr. Utz worked in the insurance industry and since 1974 owned and operated Utz Insurance Agency in Plymouth, Ohio from which he retired in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion, enjoyed bird watching, fishing, and traveling, and was an avid crossword puzzle worker. Most of all he enjoyed his home and his family.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law; Denise and Bill Ross of Callander, Ontario, Canada and Debbie and Mike Hart of Shelby; five grandchildren, Bryan and Dan Ross and Jeff, Meg and Tom Hart; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Thomas and Kyle Utz of Ontario and Linda Utz of Shelby; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and James Utz, and his step-mother, Thelma Milliron Utz.

Private funeral services will be held Tuesday from the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Reverend Sherry Calvert, chaplain with Stein Hospice, will officiate with interment in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery. Calling hours will not be observed.
