Charles Hamman

September 30, 1926 ~ March 27, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Charles A. "Grandpa" Hamman age 90, resident of Shelby, died peacefully Monday, March 27, 2017 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus with his family by his side. 

Born September 30, 1926 in Mansfield to Albert and Lestia (Young) Hamman, he had been a Mansfield resident moving to Shelby in 1963. He was a 1944 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School where he had run track. He had been employed as a milkman for Isaly's Dairy for 15 years before becoming a truck driver with Roethlisberger Trucking, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. 

Charlie was an avid sports fan following Shelby Whippets programs for over 50 years. He especially enjoyed following Girls Softball. In 2015 the  Shelby Whippet Boys Basketball program awarded the Charles C. W. Williams "Sixth Man Award" to Charlie  and his wife Kate. He always looked forward to going on his daily drives and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 69 years, Catherine "Kate" (Hall) Hamman, whom he wed October 11, 1947; two sons Paul "Pudge" (Becky) Hamman of Shelby, Terry (Nancy) Hamman of Westerville; nine grandchildren Scott, Angie, Kandis, Chris, Nick, Kyle, Trisha, Holly & Ashley; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother Carl Hamman of Springfield, OH; two sisters Betty Mortz of California, Sandy Rucker of Mansfield; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons Phil and Chuck Hamman and sister Carol Sweet.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby. Reverend James Macdonald will officiate with interment in Mansfield Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby Athletic Boosters or the First United Methodist Church at 18 S Gamble St, Shelby, OH 44875.
