Gene E. Johnson

June 20, 1926 ~ June 30, 2015 (age 89) 89 Years Old

We lost the blessing of Gene E. Johnson's presence, age 89, of Shelby early Tuesday morning June 30, 2015 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  

Born June 20, 1926 in  Shelby to Ralph R. and Flossie (Seaton) Johnson, he had been a Shelby resident all of his life.  He attended Shelby Senior High and immediately after graduation in 1944 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He served proudly for 2 years as a diesel mechanic in the South Pacific. He returned home from the Navy and married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Margaret (Tink) Ann Reynolds. They were married on July 26, 1946. They had a wonderful and happy life together which included many rounds of golf, where he had a hole in one at the Shelby Country Club.  He was co-owner operator of Bloom and Johnson Auto Sales and was formerly employed with Bourgeois Auto Sales. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, former member of the Shelby Country Club and a member and past commander of the American Legion Broderick Post #291 where he had bowled on the American Legion league team. Gene's greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law Dr. Gary and Tammy Johnson; one daughter and son-in-law Terri and Denny Hummel all of Shelby; 8 grandchildren Kris (Shannon), Nic (Lori) and Phil (Miranda) Johnson, Tiffany (Josh) Foy, Brooke (Tim) Melia and  Garrett  (Lauren) Hummel , Kelly (Josh) Palm and Angie (Jeremy) Mohn; 6 great grandchildren, Lexi & Luke Mohn, Braden & Riley Palm and Adalyn Gene & Brynley Foy; one brother Michael Johnson of N. Canton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Jim McBride and Laurie and Dick Parrish, all of Shelby; his step-mother, Beatrice Johnson; special friend, Marilyn Terman; nieces, nephews and other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Tink) Johnson in 2008 one brother, Dean Johnson and an infant sister.  

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday July 3, 2015 from the Barkdull Funeral Home.  Rev. Russel Yoak will officate with Military Services provided by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail at Oakland Cemetery.  Friends may call Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial expressions may be made to the Alzheimers Association or to the Mid-Ohio Animal Welfare League.
