Virginia "Ginny" L Roop

November 21, 1929 ~ June 22, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Virginia "Ginny" L. Roop, age 87, resident of Shelby died Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  Born November 21, 1929 in Louisa, Kentucky to James T. & Grace Vivian (McClure) Ligon, she had been a resident of Shelby since 1969.

During Ginny’s younger years, she worked in a gift shop and restaurant in Chimney Corner, West Virginia.  A short time later, she began working at Kroger in Gauley Bridge where she met the love of her life, Howard V. Roop.  Howard and Virginia were married just a few months later on June 25, 1949.  Ginny then became a stay-at-home Mom, raising their five children.  They remained in West Virginia until the early 60’s, at which time they moved to Ohio for a job that Howard took in the Northeast Ohio area.  Howard’s job later transferred to Shelby in 1969. After their last child was nearly through grade school, Ginny returned to retail, where she retired from Fisher Big Wheel in 1994.

Virginia was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Shelby where she sang in the church choir for many years but had more recently attended Church Requel at St. Luke’s Point of Grace in Mansfield.  She loved to cook, sew and crochet.  In fact, she was well-known for her seamstress work, making both her daughters’ wedding gowns, among several pieces of formal wear and other countless articles of clothing and crocheted pieces throughout her lifetime.  Family and friends counted on her for alterations as well.  She also loved word search puzzles, reading and gardening but most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and the rest of her family.

She is survived by her children, Larry (Nancy) Roop of Shelby; William (Diane) Roop of Lexington; Terry (Christina) Roop of Shelby; Linda (Dennis) Brock of Shelby and Shirley (Jerrod) Williams of Shelby; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace (Clifford) Humphrey of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia and Nancy Slocomb of Mobile, Alabama; numerous nieces and nephews, including special niece, Lois (Jack) Kilbane of Fairview Park, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; granddaughters, Sheila Marie Brust and Amy Lynn Roop; brothers, Don, Norton, Charles, Barlow and Gene Ligon and sister, Olivia "Libby" Withrow.

Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Monday, June 26,2017 at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby.  Close friend, Marty Metzger will officiate with interment held in Oakland Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and also Monday one hour prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers memorial expressions may be made to Riverside Methodist Hospital at 180 Broad St. 31st Floor, Columbus, OH 43215.  The family would like to express their thanks for the loving care provided by the staff at Ohio Health in Shelby and at Riverside, including Hospice Care located there at the hospital.
