Viola M. "Pearl" Smedley Hess, age 76, of Carter Lane, Shelby died Friday, May 1, 2009 at her home surrounded by family after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Born June 10, 1932 in Shelby to Andy and Hattie (Baldridge) Hicks she was a lifelong Shelby resident. She attended Shelby High School and later worked at Shelby Gum Company and Quanex before leaving to work at Heritage Care Center, a job she loved very much. Working with older people was something that made her feel good and felt like a calling from God.

Pearl was a lifelong member of the Church of God and attended Master's Hand in Castalia, OH. She served the church as Ladies Ministry President, Sunday School teacher, youth leader and received many outstanding awards, such as, the Life Achievement Award for her outstanding dedication to the church and her community. She was an outstanding woman of God leading everyone she could to the salvation of Jesus. Giving all she had to people of all ages, she dedicated her life to serving others.

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Hess, whom she married June 14, 1980; two sons, Harold (Kathy) Smedley and Marvin (Kim) Smedley of Shelby; two daughters, Sandy (Mike) Hershiser of Shelby and Vonda (Ben) Patrick of Milan; two step-sons Mark Hess of Shelby and Keith Hess of Dallas, TX; six grandchildren, Amy Rinehart, Matt (Robin) Smedley and Jeff (Tiffany) Smedley, Tonya (Eduardo) Dos Santos, Erin (Mike) Keefe, Trent Patrick; seven great-grandchildren, Brandon and Travis Rinehart , Remington, Cassidy, Kennady , Gabriel and Cameron Smedley and two special little guys, Samuel and Malachi; two sisters, Lucille Walton and Bessie Kelm of Shelby; one brother, Awalt "Doc" Hicks of Toledo; and her loving church family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Emmitt , Arthur, Lester, Dean and Robert Hicks and two sisters, Myrtle Corlett and Lida Mackin.

In lieu of flowers, Pearl wished that you honor her by donating to the Youth and Children's Department of Master's Hand Church of God, 7410 Magill Road, Castalia, Ohio 44824 so her vision for young people would carry on.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 6, 2009 from Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby with the Reverend Ben Patrick officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, May 5 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
