Betty J Smith

Betty J. Smith, age 88 of Powell, Ohio, died Monday, June 27, at her daughter Darice’s home in Powell after multiple courageous battles with cancer surrounded by her loving family and her beloved caregiver Allegra Penn.
 
Born December 24, 1933 in Shelby to J. Clifford Preston and Geraldine (Smith) Preston, she was a lifelong Shelby resident until May of 2015 when she and Forrest moved to Powell to be closer to her daughters and her grandchildren, grandhorses, granddogs, and grandcats which she spoiled immensely.  A 1951 graduate of Shelby High School, she was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, sewing, crochet and knitting, volunteering at the hospital, and at one time, attending the Cloverleaf Square Dance Club. Over the years, she crocheted thousands of blankets for “My Very Own Blanket” in Westerville for children in the foster care system. She was the painter for her husband’s many woodcarvings as she traveled with him to his many competition shows. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby where she was a member of the choir and held positions on various committees. In 2005, Betty received the Jess Rath Award in recognition of her volunteer work with Christian organizations. In Powell, she and Forrest attended Powell United Methodist Church with her daughter.
 
Surviving are her two daughters and sons-in-law, Darice and Mark Allard of Powell and Renee and Bob Pharris of Lewis Center; two grandchildren, Lindsay and Matthew Allard (his fiancee Kayli Duncan); one sister, Wilma Miller of East Lansing, Michigan; one brother-in-law, Merle Smith of Plymouth; one sister-in- law, Eulalia Myers of Shelby; nieces, nephews and other relatives. A special thank you to Allegra for her loving care. 
 
She was preceded in death by her father in 1984; her mother in 2007; and her husband Forrest E. Smith, whom she wed June 6, 1954, in April of 2021. 
 
 
Friends may visit 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Saturday, July 2, 2022 at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Funeral services will be held immediately following at 12:00 PM with Pastor Jeffrey Croft officiating. Services will be live streamed via Barkdull Funeral Home's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BarkdullFH. Interment will be held in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby, Ohio immediately following the funeral service.
