Arnold "Arnie" Lloyd Bates, age 84, of Shelby died Friday morning June 8, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born April 20, 1934 in Lyons, NY to Jack & Yvonne (Marshal-Groat) Bates, he has been a Shelby resident since 1987. Arnie had served his country in the US Marine Corps. He most recently owned and operated his own lawn care company.
Arnie loved to build things. He built two boats, one was a house boat and the other a trimaran and most recently he was building Dobro guitars. He was also an avid musician and was into bluegrass music, playing with the band Willow Creek.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Egner) Bates, whom he married March 11, 1991; his children, Steven (Doris) Bates of New York, Scott (Bonnie) Bates of New York, Shawn Bates of Columbus; numerous grandchildren and a niece Tiffany.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Bates.
Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday June 11, 2018 from 10:00AM-11:00AM. A graveside service will follow at 11:00AM at Oakland Cemetery where Dave Rossi and Woody Gerhart will officiate. Memorial expressions may be made to the FISH food pantry or to the Salvation Army.
