Eugene "Blackie" Smith age 89 died on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Mill Creek Nursing Home in Galion.
Born on October 12, 1929 to George and Norma (Howard) Smith, he had been a resident of Richland County for 55 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. Blackie was a truck driver for Yellow Freight for many years and was proud of his achievement to drive over two million miles without an accident. He was an avid deer hunter and loved traveling.
Blackie is survived by his wife, Billie Jean (Johnson) Smith, whom he wed on October 30, 1954; daughters, Coleen E. (Roger) Parks of Shelby, Lois O. (Rick) Finnerty of Mansfield, Louise D. (Rory) Burgin of Galion; grandchildren, Brian, Brandi, Brittany, Tammie, and Kristi; 9 great grandchildren; one brother Jack Smith of Cornell, Wisconsin; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by three brothers, George, Art, and Lawrence Smith;and two sisters Jewel Sheldon and Annie Light.
Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby Monday, May 13, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with Pastor Doug O Tackett officiating.
