Paul Parrish

December 5, 1947 ~ December 19, 2017 (age 70) 70 Years Old

Paul Richard "Dick" Parrish, age 70, a resident of Shelby, died Tuesday December 19, 2017 at OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.

Born December 5, 1947 in Houston, Texas to Paul H. and Dorothy (Scholik) Parrish, he had been a Shelby resident since 1963. He was a 1967 graduate of Shelby Senior High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in Education at the University of Evansville in Indiana. He was a veteran of the Air National Guard, serving during the Vietnam War era.

Dick was formerly employed for 31 years with Miami Systems. He became a substitute teacher with Shelby City Schools while renewing his teaching license to pursue a second career as a teacher, which was his true calling. He began teaching at St. Mary's Catholic School in 2006, retiring in 2015, and was currently teaching history at the Sacred Heart School.

Dick was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He was an avid fly fisherman and had volunteered with Project Healing Waters for disabled veterans. He was a talented artist who painted in oils and watercolors. He was on the National Guard Rifle Shooting team during his service and was a member of the Mansfield Model Club, masterfully assembling and painting model military vehicles. Dick was very passionate about studying history, especially WWII. Although a man of many talents and interests, spending time with his family was his greatest joy.  He was a cherished grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Laurie Parrish, whom he wed October 4, 1975; daughters, Katie (CJ) Poole of Shelby and Molly (Israel) Martin of Columbus; grandchildren, Wyatt and Boone Martin; step-grandchildren, Logan, David, and Brody Poole; one brother David (Barbara) Parrish of Hawaii; one sister Susan (David) Wilke of Jamestown, NY; brother-in-law Michael Johnson of North Canton and sister-in-law Linda (Jim) McBride of Shelby; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter Abby Michelle; sister-in-law Lynne Johnson; brothers and sisters-in-law Dean and Betty Johnson and Gene and Tink Johnson.
