Robert Dennis Obituary

Robert L. "Gramps" Dennis, age 90, resident of, Shelby died Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Ohio Health Shelby Hospital. 

Born January 16, 1928 in Shelby to Gerald Sylvester and Georgia Beth (Sybrandt) Dennis he was a lifelong Shelby resident. Mr. Dennis graduated from Shelby High School in 1946 and attended Ohio Wesleyan College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the occupation period of WWII. Mr. Dennis was employed with Shelby Mutual Insurance Company for thirty-five years, retiring in 1983 and Buurma Farms in Celeryville for ten years. 

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church; Rotary, past president; O'Brien Post #326; National Rifle Association and trustee emeritus of Marvin Memorial Library. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodcarving, photography. Mr. Dennis was a long time supporter of Shelby High School athletics and was known affectionately by many students as "Grandpa" Dennis. He had been an athlete himself, playing football for the Shelby High School, Ohio Wesleyan, the Shelby Blues, Bucyrus Green Hornets and Mansfield Rangers. He had also been a distance runner and participated in multiple marathons, such as Boston, Marine Corps and Detroit Free Press International marathons. 

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Betty "Gail" (Hailey) Dennis whom he wed on September 8, 1950; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Chad and Cindy Dennis of Galion, OH. and Paul Dennis of Shelby; one daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Jim Scheid of Delaware, OH.; six grandchildren, Heather  (Christie McElfresh) Dennis, Katie (Jason) Balliet, Kelly Jo (David) Linclon, Michael (Kiley Roberts) Scheid, Jeremy (Casey) Dennis and Nicole (Brian) Burkhart; one brother and one sister-in-law, Michael and Lee Dennis of Longwood, FL.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Gerald Dennis, II.


A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Calling hours will be not be observed. Memorial expressions can be made to the Shelby Athletic Boosters or the First United Methodist Church in Shelby at 18 S Gamble St, Shelby, OH 44875.
