Wayne Messersmith

Wayne E. Messersmith, Sr. age 82, resident of rural Shelby died Monday June 12, 2017 at his home. 

Born May 2, 1935 in Shelby to George Sr. and Virginia (College) Messersmith, he had been a Shelby area resident all his life.  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and had served as reservist in the SeeBees for 18 years.  Wayne retired from Copperweld  following 28 years of service.

Known for his wonderful pie baking he enjoyed giving his baked goods to friends and businesses alike. During his lifetime he enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting and most of all spending time in his garden.

Survivors include his three sons, Donald (Julie) Messersmith of Burgoon, Oh, Gary (Laura) Messersmith of Mansfield and Wayne (Penelope) Messersmith of Shelby; one step-son, Mike McGill of Texas; three daughters, Lisa Ann Messersmith of Goosecreek, SC, Jean (Scott) McKinney of Ontario and Sarah (Andrew Cox) Bricker of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother Harold (Tsuya) Messersmith of Oxnard, CA, one sister, Janet Vanderveen of Marion;  sister-in-law Emily Messersmith of Tallahassee, FL, nieces nephews and other relatives.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Crystal (Newmeyer) Messersmith, whom he wed July 3, 1965; three brothers, George R. Messersmith, Jr.; Richard D. Messersmith and Floyd Messersmith; one sister Margarette Burkett.

 

At Wayne's request there will be no funeral services. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory 4:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, June 15, 2017.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of North Central Ohio.
