Darwin J. Stine, age 74, resident of Gaylord Ave., Shelby died peacefully Sunday, August 24, 2008 in Crestwood Care Center with his family by his side.
Born August 23, 1934 to Otto and Teresa (Metzger) Stine, he had been a lifelong Shelby area resident. A 1952 graduate of Shelby High School, he had attended Sacred Heart School. Darwin was the owner of Stine Masonry until his retirement in 1992 after suffering a stroke. He remained at home under the care of his wife Wanda and his sister Sabina until taking up residence in Crestwood Care Center in 2005. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, was a former member of St. Mary's School Board and was instrumental in organizing the Jet's youth basketball program. He was a past member of the Shelby K of C and the Shelby J.C.'s. Darwin enjoyed playing cards and golf and looked forward to the time he spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Urmey-Stine; three sons and two daughters-in-law, David Stine of Shelby, Douglas and Kelly Stine of Shelby and Stephen and Cindy Stine of Mansfield; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Crafton of Phoenix, Arizona, Janeen and Joseph Keller and Allison and Chris McNary of Shelby; 16 grandchildren, Jaime, Jordan and Justin (Ann) Keller, Amanda, Danielle and Madison Crafton, Dylan and Spencer Blevins, and Zoe McNary, Brittany, Devon, Stephanie, Cody, Kayleigh, Cameron and Kassie Stine; one great grandson Keegan Keller; five step grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Woods, Rachael Westler, Adam Sweet, and Aaron Blevins; his brother, James (Shirley) Stine of Shelby; three sisters, Charlotte Auer and Janet (Tom) Yetzer of Shelby and Sabina Rice of Macedonia, Ohio; nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Houpt and Marlene Messimore.
Funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Thursday from Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Nicholas Cunningham will officiate with interment in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Home and Public Health and Juvenile Diabetes Association.
