Larry E. Siegfried, age 71, resident of Perrysville, Ohio went Home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Thursday, October 14, 2010. He passed away at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his loving family. Born May 22, 1939 in Shelby to John and Barbara (Parkison) Siegfried, he grew up in Shelby and began his outstanding basketball career at Shelby High School from which he graduated in 1957. His God-given natural talent and drive to succeed lead him to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes who won a National Championship in 1960. He graduated in 1961, earning All-America honors his senior year, and went on to play professional basketball winning five NBA championships in seven seasons with the Boston Celtics. In 1972 Larry retired from playing the game and began coaching the Houston Rockets until his retirement in 1976. With all he had accomplished on the court, his greatest legacy is his Faith. A loving, God-fearing man, he spent a large part of his life sharing messages of peace and hope with others, including prison inmates across the state of Ohio, whom he counseled through his prison programs, a ministry that was dear to his heart. Larry attended the Little Washington Congregational Church in Mansfield. A man of much wisdom, Larry enjoyed reading the Bible and his countless books of faith. He also enjoyed the outdoors; spending a great deal of his free time biking, fishing, hunting, and landscaping in his yard. Larry also received much joy in mentoring to area youth on and off the basketball court. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Tina (Caskin) Siegfried whom he wed Sept. 9, 1972; three daughters, Carie (Nick) Muhlenkamp of Dublin; Erin Siegfried of Westlake, and Olivia Siegfried of Columbus; one grandson; his mother, Barbara Siegfried of Shelby; two sisters, Bonnie Slone (Robert Hoover) of Shelby; Linda (Ron) Fagg of Willard; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to list. He was preceded in death by his father, John Siegfried in 2000. Calling hours will be held at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 from 1:30 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Private funeral services will be held on Wednesday with Reverend Dave Root officiating. Burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery, Shelby. In lieu of flowers, memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Foundation (memo: Larry Siegfried Park), 142 N. Gamble, Shelby, OH 44875 and the Butler Clearfork Adult Center and Nutrition Site, PO Box 115, Butler, OH 44822.
