Eugene 'Butch' Payne Obituary Eugene 'Butch' R. Payne, age 83, died Thursday, December 10, 2020 at The Good Shepherd Home and Villa in Ashland surrounded by his loving family.
Born July 25, 1937 in Shelby to Rose (Arcudi) Payne, he was a Shelby area resident for the majority of his life.
Butch was a 1955 graduate of Shelby High School, and was heavily involved in athletics. He had played on the Shelby football team and was very proud of the fact that he and his nephew were the first and last football teams to win the league title the same year as the baseball and basketball teams. Butch overall was an avid sports enthusiast, but especially with Shelby Whippets Sports. He never missed a football game or basketball game. For over 25 years Butch along side his friends had worked the 'Chain Gang' for the Whippet Football Games. He was also a 1975 state champion in softball for the 76 Plaza Team and played with a local softball team until he was 60 years old.
He had served in the United States Army and an active member of The Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Butch will be remembered for being a people person and had never met a stranger.
He is survived by his beloved wife Daryl (Herz) Payne whom he married on June 29, 1963; son Michael (Margie) Payne of Mansfield; daughter Angelique (Steve Byus) Buckingham of Mansfield; brother James Payne of Shelby; godson and nephew Jeremy (Celina) Hall of Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-law Clara Billotte of Mansfield; brother-in-law Tony (Stephanie) Herz of Mansfield; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his step-father James Payne and mother-in-law Doris Garrett.
A celebration of Butch's life will be held Friday, June 25, 2021 at 5:00PM at Barkdull Funeral Home and Crematory with Fr. Chris Mileski officiating. Friends and family may call at the funeral home Friday from 3:00-5:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby Athletic Boosters in care of care of Cathy Dodge at 145 Mansfield Ave. Apt 7, Shelby, OH 44875 or the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 29 West St. Shelby, OH 44875.
