Gilberta "Chick" Eva Farnwalt, age 94 of Shelby, passed away peacefully Monday, August 31, 2026 at the Willows of Willard, surrounded by her loving family.
Born December 13, 1931, in Amesbury, Massachusetts, to the late Arthur and Alexina (LaBelle) LaForest, she devoted her life to caring for her family as a homemaker.
Chick enjoyed taking walks, spending time in her sunroom, and traveling around on her three-wheeled bike. She was an avid reader, especially enjoying murder-mystery novels, and treasured the gatherings she shared with her condo friends in her garage. When it came to sports, Chick was a devoted Ohio State football fan and enjoyed watching tennis.
Chick was especially known for her incredible pie-baking skills. There was not a pie she couldn’t bake, and her family and friends certainly enjoyed the delicious results.
Above all, Chick cherished the time she spent with her family. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and the memories they made together will be treasured by all who knew and loved her.
Those who will cherish her memories include her daughter, Karen Stroup of Shelby, Ohio; her grandchildren, Ryan Farnwalt, Randy Farnwalt, Tracy (Lee) Riddel, Jennifer (Mike) Schneider, Matt Carr, and Cory (Jill) Stroup; her great grandchildren Lexi Farnwalt, Asher Farnwalt, Kyle (Di) Farnwalt, Nevaeh Osborne, Madison Riddel, Parker Riddel, Lexi Riddel, Ashley Schneider, Lexi Schneider, Andrew Schneider, Ava Mazurek, Triston Carr, Mason Carr, Harper Stroup, Bryson Stroup and Riley Stroup; her great great grandchildren Katalina Farnwalt and Charlotte Farnwalt: her siblings Patrick LaForest of Galion, Ohio and Jean Miller of California; her brother-in-law Richard Nelson and her nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Farnwalt; her son, Gary Farnwalt; and her siblings Maurice LaForest, Roger LaForest, Bob LaForest, Annette Nelson, Pauline LaForest; and son-in-law Thomas Stroup.
Friends and family may come to honor her life at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
