John D. Broderick, age 69, resident of Shelby Ave. died Sunday, November 29, 2009 in MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital with family by his side. Born December 24, 1939 in Shelby to William and Esther (Spangler) Broderick he had been a Shelby resident the majority of his life. A 1957 graduate of Shelby High School he attended Ohio University in Athens. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era as a military intelligence agent with the 5th Special Forces Group, Airborne Division working with the Green Berets. John was co-owner of the Shelby Mutual Insurance Agency in Shelby. He was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and lifetime member of the Special Forces Association. He was a former member of the Shelby Ad Club, SAC Club, and the Shelby Country Club. John always looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada. He devoted the last 20 plus years of his life to the loving care of his wife, Carol. Survivors include his wife, Carol A. (Huggins) Broderick, whom he wed July 18, 1964; his children, Randy (Raychel) Broderick of Shelby; Alicia Broderick (Mike Conaway) of Union, NJ and Mike Broderick of Shelby; four grandchildren, Alec and Clay Broderick; Nicholas and Lauren Conaway; one brother, William (Betty) Broderick of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Marjorie Tenpenny of Shelby; his mother-in-law, Eileen Huggins of Shelby, niece, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Eugene and George Broderick; three sisters, Joanne Utz, Mary Biglin and Kathleen Simmering; and his father-in-law, Clyde Huggins. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Father Nicholas Cunningham will officiate with interment in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
