Karl Todd Henning Obituary Karl Todd Henning, age 73, left this world surrounded by dear friends on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Born in Shelby, Ohio, on September 30, 1950, to Albert and Maxine (Sanders) Henning, Todd graduated from Shelby High School in 1968. He attended Ohio University in Athens for a year before graduating from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. He then spent a year as a VISTA volunteer in New Orleans before returning to Columbus. Always creative, design-oriented, and an excellent writer, Todd worked at first in video production, receiving an individual grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to produce a video on Victorian architecture called "The Victorian House." Keeping up with his interest in journalism, he also wrote several free-lance articles for Columbus Monthly magazine. By the early 1980s, he had settled on a career as a builder, forming an independent construction company. One of his first contracts was the restoration of the legendary James Thurber House in Columbus, completed in 1984. He co-founded a successful design/build firm, Baker Henning Productions, in 1986, followed later by The Henning Company. During his more than 30 years as a builder, Todd developed a reputation for high quality work, often with repeat clients, building or renovating custom-designed homes, condos and commercial buildings in Columbuss Short North and German Village, among other places. After retirement, Todd returned to Shelby where he spent many happy hours playing golf and enjoying relaxing conversations with friends of all ages. In recent years, being a proud "Papa" to his two granddaughters also brought him tremendous joy. In addition to his parents, Todd was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Bell (Henning) Bregstein. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Adam Cumby, and granddaughters Charley and Sophie; his former wife, Judy Williams; his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (Posey) and Lou Massino; his brother-in-law Dick Bregstein; and his niece and nephew Alison and Jared Bregstein. The family would especially like to thank Mark Studer, Howie Knapp, Steve Knapp, and Sheila Tracy for their love and support, and for giving Todd many years of great times with good friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, in Shelby, Ohio. Please meet at Black Fork Commons, 18 West Main Street in downtown Shelby, for a remembrance of Todd at 4:00 p.m., after which we will continue the celebration at Webers Bar, 51 West Main Street. All are welcome. To honor Todd and his interest in his hometown, we would welcome a donation to The Shelby Foundations Downtown Revitalization Fund in his memory (theshelbyfoundation.org). Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to assist the family with arrangements. Services Celebration of Life Black Fork Commons 18 West Main St. Shelby, OH 44875
