Joannice "Dolly" L. Metzger

Joannice L. "Dolly" Metzger, age 87, former resident of Maple Heights, Ohio died Sunday August 2, 2020 in the Willows at Willard. 

Born December 31, 1932 in Richland County to Anthony and Amelia (Mahl) Metzger she was a graduate of the St. Francis Academy in Joliet, Illinois receiving her Bachelors of Arts degree from the College of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. She then attended Kent State University taking Master Degree courses in Early Childhood and Special Needs. 

Joannice was a Catholic elementary school teacher in Ohio and Illinois for 18 years. She continued teaching for 29 years as a special needs teacher with the Cuyahoga Co. Board of Developmental Disabilities retiring in 1998.

She was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Maple Heights and the State Teachers Retirement Systems. Dolly enjoyed baseball, especially the Cleveland Indians, crocheting, crafts and reading. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family and her beloved dogs. 

Survivors include  numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by five brothers, George, Albert, Otto "Sonny", Wilfrid "Boots" and Edward "Ebbie" Metzger and six sisters, Freda Metzger, Frances "Betts" Leppert, Lucille "Honey" Stover, Rosemary "Rosie" Johnson and Mary 'Toots' Clemens and Ruth Ann "Gertrude" Nichols. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, August 6, 2020, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby. Father Chris Mileski  will officiate with burial to follow in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby from 9:00 to 10:30 AM. 

It is requested that those visiting, please be brief, practice appropriate social distancing and wear a mask if you are able. Those who have been experiencing any signs or symptoms of illness, please feel free to pay respects via mail or online condolence.
