Harold "Smiley" L. Yetzer

Harold L. "Smiley" Yetzer, age 89, of Shelby died Thursday morning September 22, 2016 at Ohio Health Shelby.

Born April 5, 1927 in Shelby to Urban & Hattie (Stephan) Yetzer, he has been a lifelong Shelby resident. A 1945 graduate of Shelby High School, Harold then attended Dayton University. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy and then worked at the Shelby Depot as a forklift driver, the GSA and for Pioneer Career & Technology Center. 

He was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Senior Center. Smiley enjoyed playing euchre and pinochle, watching sporting events, walking and bowling. He used to set up the pins at the local bowling in Shelby in his younger years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Kohls) Yetzer, whom he married June 16, 1951; his children, Allen (Susan) Yetzer of Shelby, Paul (Betty) Yetzer of Galion, Stephen Yetzer of Port St. Lucie, FL, Theresa Coovert of Shelby, Gregory Yetzer, Ruth (John) Donnersbach of Shelby, Jeanne (Daniel) Coovert of Ashland, Edward (Julie) Yetzer of Ashland and Kenneth (Beth) Yetzer of Maryland; 30 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; siblings, Mary Metzger, Marjorie (Richard) Riley, Thomas (Janet) Yetzer, Robert Yetzer, Richard (Joann) Yetzer and James (Betty) Yetzer.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Anthony Yetzer; nephew Eric Yetzer; sister, Patricia Reese and brother, Charles Yetzer.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Monday September 26, 2016 at the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Chris Milinski with interment held in the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery where the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will honor him for his service to our country. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday from 2-6 PM where the rosary will be recited at 5:45PM. Memorial expressions may be made to the Most Pure heart of Mary Catholic Church or to the Shelby Senior Center.
