Howard V. Roop

March 29, 1931 ~ June 13, 2015 (age 84) 84 Years Old

     Howard V. Roop, age 84, died Saturday morning, June 13, 2015 at the Hospice House in Ashland.  Born March 29, 1931 in Vanetta, West Virginia to Howard R. & Lois F. (Arthur) Roop, he has been a Shelby resident since 1969. 
   Howard retired from Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in 1984, prior to that he had worked at the Ford Motor Company in the engine and transmission plant in Cleveland. He was a truck driver for the Department of Transportation for the State of West Virginia and had worked for the Hope Gas Company running heavy equipment. In his early years he had worked in the coal mines with his father and brothers and was the Produce Manager for Kroger and was then promoted to Area Manager. 
   Howard was a social member of the American Legion for over 40 years and a past member of the Eagles club.
His number one hobby was music and he loved to play bluegrass music.  In his early years, he had his own band and had played guitar with Bill Monroe and Hassle Sparks. He taught all of his sons to play music and even played in their bands, The Horizon Band and later Whitewater Rush. Howard also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing while camping, watching Little League Baseball as well as the Cleveland Indians. His family meant the world to him and he loved feeding the birds with his grandchildren and was very proud of every single one of them. He was also known to spoil his grandchildren. He also cherished Sunday dinners with his family. Howard had an open heart and never met a stranger.
   He is survived by his wife, Virginia L. (Ligon) Roop, whom he married June 25, 1949; his children, Larry (Nancy) Roop of Shelby, William (Diane) Roop of Lexington, Terry (Christina) Roop of Shelby, Linda (Dennis) Brock of Shelby and Shirley (Jerrod) Williams of Shelby; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece that he helped raise as his daughter, Lois F. Kilbane and her husband, John J.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; two granddaughters, Amy Roop in 1982 and Sheila Marie Brust in 1973; three brothers, Lacy, Travis and Tracy Roop and five sisters, Elsie Kibler, Maggie Nuebert, Odessa Davidson, Reva Miller and Icie Nary.
   Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday June 17, 2015 at St. Luke's Point of Grace at 2 Marion Ave. Mansfield, Ohio. Pastor Mark Pierce will officiate with interment held in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby on Tuesday from 5-8 PM and also Wednesday one hour prior to the funeral service.
